A crib is a part of furniture used to provide a sleeping environment for infants until they can sit up independently or support their bodies with their hands or knees. The crib can be used up to six months and provides a safer enclosure.

The new version of the European standard EN 1130:2019 "Children's Furniture - Cribs - Safety Requirements and Testing Methods" provides safety requirements and testing methods for the use of household and non household baby beds (including cradles, hammocks, bedside beds). Baby beds used for medical purposes and in hospitals are not within the scope of this standard.

Compared with EN 1130-1:1996 and EN 1130-2:1996, the new version of the standard draws on the experience of bedside bed accidents that have occurred in Europe and other regions, and improves the mechanical requirements. The new version of the standard has also revised requirements in the following areas, including chemical hazards, flammability risks, suffocation risks stuck in bed frame gaps and openings, fall risks, instructions for using baby mattresses, and warnings to parents.

In addition, this standard has been revised mainly in the following five aspects:

  • Integrate the two parts of EN 1130:1996 into one document;

  • Adjusted document structure based on hazard types;

  • Update the testing methods in EN 1130-2:1996;

  • Increase requirements and testing methods for suspended and bedside baby beds;

  • Increase requirements for chemical and thermal hazards.

This standard was developed by the Furniture Subcommittee of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN/TC 207) and provides support for the European Commission's General Product Safety Directive (2001/95/EC).
