The European child safety seat standard ECE R44 has been revised again: ECE R129 will fully replace ECE R44 from September 1, 2022

The European standard for safety seats is issued by the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE), and currently there are two standards for safety seats in use in Europe, ECE R44/04 and ECE R129 (i-Size). All child seats on the European market must comply with ECE standards, which are also one of the most universal safety seat standards in the world.


ECE R44/04 is the 04 version of the R44 child safety seat standard that officially came into effect in June 2006, while ECE R129 (i-Size) is a new child safety seat standard that officially came into effect in July 2013. Currently, these two standards are being implemented simultaneously. The main differences between these two standards can be briefly explained in the following table:

 The ECE R44 regulation was revised again in January 2020, and the approximate translation is as follows:

  • Starting from September 1, 2017, child restraint systems with ISOFIX in groups 0, 0+, and I will no longer be approved for type certification, except for child restraint systems in groups II and above;


  • Starting from September 1, 2020, the extension of products with ISOFIX in Group 0, Group 0+, and Group I will no longer be approved for type certification, except for the extension of child restraint systems in Group II and above;


  • Starting from September 1, 2019, Group II and Group II, III non integral forward child restraint systems will no longer be approved for type certification. Child restraint systems in Group I and above will no longer be approved for type certification from September 1, 2020;


    Note: The deadline for the above terms is September 1, 2020


  • Starting from September 1, 2023, Group II and Group II, III non integral forward child restraint systems will no longer be approved for extended certification. The child restraint system of Group I and above will no longer be approved for extended certification from September 1, 2022;


  • Starting from September 1, 2020, child restraint systems other than Group III under this regulation will no longer be approved for type certification;


  • Starting from September 1, 2022, the extension of certification for Group III child restraint systems under this regulation will no longer be approved.


Summary:Starting from September 1, 2020, new products other than Group III under the E24 R44 regulation will no longer be approved for type approval,(Note: It is 2 months of certification time after deducting the application materials submitted to Ireland),That is to say, starting from the end of June this month, new products other than Group III will no longer be accepted for ECE R44 certification applications. Please pay close attention to this for all child safety seat companies.


The revision of the ECE R44 regulation also means that from September 1, 2022, ECE R129 will fully replace ECE R44.
